I'd go for time in Santa Monica.

ETA...good places to drink and eat, a town you can walk around, the beach, the pier, short walk to Venice Beach..

Not from me, I'm afraid, as we have friends with whom we stay in Santa Monica.

If staying in Santa Monica, I would stay at Shutters on the Beach it has a nice vibe about it, lots of interesting places and nice beach location.

A night in Las Vegas can always be fun ): it's a four - five hour drive
Obviously no good if you arrive into LAX late at night or leave early in the morning.
Santa Monica is a nice place to visit, my wife and I stayed at the Hotel Carmel it was nothing special but is in a good location close to the Pier and if you like Thai food there is a great place next door that is very reasonably priced.

Enjoy whatever you decide.

I'd agree with Daffodil

Santa Monica definitely, and dependent on your budget Shutters, or if you want somewhere cheaper the Holiday Inn at the Pier is fine

We have booked the Georgian for 2 nights when we are in LA in August. Got a good deal directy with the hotel. It is right on the beach near Santa Monica Pier. We will also book the 'Day in LA tour', not sure if you would have time for this though ?

Hope that helps
