Before I book, can I determine if seats can be selected?

I know that Virgin Atlantic enables seat selection 90 days before departure, and I know that only a percentage of seats can be selected before T-24 hours. If I am booking about a month before departure, can I learn if there are seats to be selected immediately after booking? I can see empty seats on Expert Flyer, but, before I pay for my booking, can I determine if those seats can be selected with the 90-day feature?

As far as I know, the only way to see the actual available seats is via Manage My Booking and that is only available once you have made the booking and paid the money.
An alternative may be to phone to make the booking, and ask the agent to check. I did that when thinking about changing a flight recently and one of the decision points for me was which seats would be available for me to pre-assign.

Sign up for a free Expert flyer account and then do a seat check. You will see a seat map of at least part of the cabin.
Good luck.

I always ring VS and ask what is available before I book. The flying club people are especially helpful and should let you know what you need to know.

This is one of the annoying things about booking VS. Many airlines let you see what seats are available before you commit to buy. It does seem reasonable to take a look at what you are buying before you make the decision but VS does not allow this even though the information is available via other sites.
When you can look at a companies offering from another site but not their own then that is a pretty basic flaw. Hopefully the new boss (ex AA) will be far more switched on to this sort of thing.

Absolutely agree with calling the FC.... I always book my seat when booking with a person rather than using computer. They are always very very helpful.
Been moved once or twice after booking for "operational" reasons but that the same for all airlines

I guess part of the issue is that, you actually aren't buying a specific seat and even if you pre-request a seat, their is no guarantee that is the seat you will finally end up flying in.

Through the MMB section, 90 days before your flight.
