Security sticker on my passport - why?

What is it with these blasted little red and white security stickers that some goon in every VS check-in or ticket desk just loves to stick on the back of my passport?
Having received a fresh one last week, I'm reminded of how hard they are to remove, seemingly they have the glue of industrial stickiness...
What is the point of them? And why on my passport?!

Dunno as to the why. But heck they do ruin your passport and after a while I'm surprised anyone can see the wood from the trees:

I hate those stickers too. Just this morning, I was looking at my passport and thinking that I should get a cover for it

Isn't it to show that they have asked you the security questions with what is allowed in hand luggage and what should be in checked luggage?
I peel mine off as soon as I get through security and my passport is covered in glue remnants as a result, appears something remains

Nail varnish remover gets shot of the glue... be careful if you get a nice cover for your passport, I've got a Mont Blanc one, and they stick these pointless stickers on that as well...
I have never seen any other airline anywhere do this - I get stickers on my luggage from airports across Asia and Africa, but never any on my passport...

VS seem to be the only airline I've flown with that uses these stickers though.
But what joey said is my understanding too - you have been asked the security questions and your passport has been checked against your BP.

Last couple of times ex Gatwick, my passport hasn't been "stickered" ?|
But a little spray of WD40 takes the glue off

I asked the staff at the gate about this once, they said it shows the passport and the visas have been verified. If there isn't one at the gate, they have to check all over again, wasting precious time.
I tried white spirit on my ones and it worked a dream, but only if you don't smoke! =-O

I'm with Joey on this, I always remove the sticker. On occasion they forget to give me one, especially if I travel on hand luggage only and turn up at the gate with my home printed boarding pass.
I get a little frisson of excitement if that happens

I feel like I've beaten the pointless system.
Small things please small minds perhaps

These stickers are used to show that your passport has been verified as genuine as all airlines get fined for allowing pax to fly with fake travel documents.
I have a passport cover, which is where most of my stickers end up, although some do actually stick them to my passport in side the cover.

But I got one on my passport at LHR T3 transfer desk last Friday, by a goon who didn't ask me any questions, look at any documentation, nothing... NADA... zip!!!
He took my passport, didn't even open up, just stuck the sticker on the back.
Wosthatabout?!
> Slinky, that is impressive, in a somewhat horrible way!
My OCD would have never let it get that far, without attacking it with some acetone!

I was told it was a baggage receipt.

It's like fake money, when your handle these things day in and day out, experience tells it doesn't feel or look right as soon as your handle it.
As with all airport security, they are also assessing your body language and the way you behave/act as well.
Also, it's never a good idea to use acetone (or any other solvent) on your passport.

Indeed - it has often been used by forgers etc to try and release the laminate that covers the photo so they can switch the photos etc.
Any damage to the page at all - no matter how innocently caused - will create suspicion over your passport.

Just realized though, I didn't get them on my last trip ... hmmm, I wonder if that's because the security questions are now online before you check in ?| .

Have a look at Slinky's photo, the baggage receipt has a barcode on it but it's another annoyance. Never had a security sticker at Glasgow strangely enough.

They aren't baggage receipts. They usually are applied to the back of your boarding pass or given to you on a separate slip.

I find them a easy way to identify my passport rather than the kids without having to open them up

Love yours Slinky.... if AU status ever questioned ... just show them back of passport.
I too had a MB holder and liked it but now made it redundant.... too many times just asked to remove it.... usually when hands full and adding to general confusion at immigration!
