Do 333-300's fly slower than 747's as my flight to UVF has just had a Schedule change same Departure time 09.40 but arrival time has Changed from 14.35 to 15.00 so 25 Minutes longer. Same on the return but only 20 minutes longer.
Anyone any ideas on this please ?

Yes they do. 744's cruise at Mach .85 and the A333 at .82

747-400
Maximum speed (at 35,000 ft) Mach 0.92 (614 mph, 533 kn, 988 km/h)
A330-300
Maximum speed (at 36,000 ft) Mach 0.86 (913 km/h or 493 kn; 567 mph
Both for straight and level flight.

wow did not know that. However thinking about it, it makes sense. They are different size planes right? so...

Are the 744's the quickest VS fly?
Where do the 346's and 343's fit in?

A34x have the same published cruising speed as A333. Remember this is their design speed for optimum wing efficiency for fuel savings, they could probably fly faster but programmed not to.
A couple of 747s have reportedly broken the sound barrier albeit accidentally in shallow dives. The first passenger plane to deliberately break the sound barrier was a modified Douglas DC-8.

How does the 787 and A380 compare with the 747-400 in terms of speed? Are slower speeds now the way things are going?

A380 cruise speed is Mach .85 max cruise is .89
787 is the same
And yes, as fuel prices go up, cruise speeds go down, though of course, at some point the airline needs to actually get the plane to the next airport, so a middle ground is meet where the costs and the speed measure out.
