I travelled with a work colleage to NY this week.

Both of us got boarding cards printed at Heathrow, I noticed my card had the word PRIORITY printed vertically in the space where upper class gets printed. My colleagues did not. We we travelling both on S class tickets but I am FCC gold he is FC silver.

I haven't seen this before, does anyone know the purpose?

Presumably it just signals that you get priority security (the wing) and boarding as FC gold -- in a way that's visually obvious to a non-VS employee and doesn't require a scan of the pass?

Or were you asking why 'priority' and not 'Upper'? That changed a while ago, I think.

This is due to an upgrade in the check in system last week.
Its been added to help with the Delta partnership so Flying Club Gold Cards, Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Diamond card holders all have this on their boarding passes now.
Unlike Flying Club the Delta membership numbers have no sequence to show the membership level which proved difficult for ground staff to know if they are Platinum or Diamond.
