With my first upgrade to UC in the bag, I was wondering what (if any) miles and tier points I will earn for my trip to Vegas in November?

My return PE flight is a 'K' so I'm guessing that'll give me 175% of miles flown (as Ag) plus three tier points. But what will I get for the outbound? I've bought a flexible ticket in economy ('L' I think) and then used miles to upgrade to a G.

From what I can tell, I will get the miles and points as if I was in economy (150% of miles and another three tier points). Is that correct?

Yep, that's correct, but the miles & TP's won't credit to your account automatically. You will need to give FC a call after you have flown to get them credited.

Yep that looks about right. You don't get UC mileage and TPs for reward upgrades unfortunately ... that would be too easy

It's one of the many long standing IT glitches on the VS system that they have known about for years, but don't do anything about.

When upgrading using points, you always seem to have to have to chase up your points for the original purchased tickets - there are many, many threads about it for just about as long as V-Flyer has been going I think. n(

Yep that is correct, for the mileage upgrades the VS IT servers don't register the original upgradeable ticket for mile and TPs to be posted... ii)

I'll have to remember that for my next trip as I've G's return upgraded from PE. All good little tips, this place is a mine of information.

Yeah they don't show how many points and TPs to be earned in the MMB either
So will be on the blower as soon as I get back

How annoyed am I that I didn't know about this system glitch!! I thought you gave up all the miles and TP points if you upgraded for that leg.

I upgraded from PE to UC with miles nearly a year ago so it's too late to claim

You won't get miles and TP for the upgraded leg, just for the base fare paid.

You should have got the TP and miles for the PE fare but you would have had to phone up to get them

just to clarify though - where you have purchased a discounted fare ie. Z for outbound then you would still get the applicable miles and TPs without having to make a call? just for the G you would have to phone to get the miles and TPs for the BASE fare upgraded from?

Think the easy way to summarise is if you have paid for the fare or the upgrade with cash you get tier points and miles.

If you upgrade the paid part of the fare with miles, you only get tier points and miles on the paid (with cash) part.

VS IT = archaic ... It sees the G fare in the booking and thinks, hold on a G fare is not eligible to any earning in miles or tier points.. none for you.

With me so far?

It does not take into account how the G fare was attained in the first place.. in this case an upgrade from a lower cabin fare class, which as it happens is eligible for miles and TPs at whichever level you are at...

As Nick says they have known about this for years and I imagine manually fixing it each time for those that know to ask is the most convenient and cost efficient for them so meh.. I fly upper class for a fraction of the published price, why not phone them to thank them and snag some more miles and TPs as a result

Some of you guys may be able to help me with a related question - about the 'membership year' for TPs. I know it can be 12 or 13 months dependent on whether you earn TPs at the beginning or end of a month. However, I'm confused about when the year starts.

I joined FC in December last year but didn't earn any miles / TPs until my first flight in July. Does my membership year for TPs and therefore FC status start in December or July? If July then my next trip in May will put me into Ag, if not, then I'll stay Red.

Go to the VS website, log in to your FC account and it'll tell you at the bottom of the Account Summary page how many TPs you need to stay AG and by when.

Not renewing gumshoe... starting out in this circumstance.

The first threshold is a rolling 12 month period, ie whilst at red the flights over the prior 12 months determine your standing. When you have reached the threshold for Ag then your membership 'years' start on the 12/13 month cycle.

In your circumstance you will achieve Ag with your flight in May 2014 and then May 2014-May 2015 will be your Ag membership year.. |:)

The thing that makes it complicated and a bit counter-intuitive is that the renewal ("membership") year is fixed, but the cycle for tier-upgrades is a rolling period. A mistake people sometimes make here is to assume that they both operate in the same way -- but they don't.

For someone in the red tier in Bretty's situation, the renewal year is moot. The rolling period determines your TPs for upgrade to AG, and then your renewal period opens when you get upgraded to AG.

It's complicated but it works to your advantage because accumulated TPs are not zeroed at membership-year-end for tier upgrades.
