Thanks just had a look and it says the following:
Number of items One
Maximum size
23 x 36 x 56 cm (that’s approx. 9 x 14 x 22 inches)
Maximum weight
10kg (22 lb)
Please note that a garment bag cannot be used as your hand baggage unless it fits the dimensions of the hand baggage allowance. If you’d like to bring one but it exceeds 23 x 36 x 56 cm, it will need to be as additional checked in baggage.
Additional items you can bring with you
To help with baggage conundrums, we’ve compiled the following list to clarify the bits and bobs you can take onboard in addition to the allowances above:
Your handbag, pocketbook or purse, as you would normally use it (in other words, not just being used to contain items that would otherwise be regarded as baggage).
So I assume now we can take hand baggage and a handbag..... ?

It is Hand Luggage plus one personal item (e.g. Handbag).

does that also apply to male pax who would perhaps be using a mini backpack (say a mini crumpler to carry camera plus inflight gadgets) plus carry on?

Even when flying economy, I've always carried a small handbag for the things I'll need during the flight so I don't have to keep going to the overhead locker for things. It's not been an issue before.

Just be wary of the 10kg weight limit which is worse than EasyJet.

I operate in the belief that a 1+1 is standard.
I always take PC in bag (no way that will I put that into the hold) and a carry on bag (normally a suit carrier). Even the American airlines, who are revenue generating monsters that take every opportunity to STING you, allow you to take 1 personal item and 1 carry on.
