best way to avoid/reduce the baggage fees with Delta

my holiday is all booked up through virgin. They have us booked on a delta flight from LAX to HON, HON to KOA then KOA to LAX.
im looking on the Delta site now and it looks like you pay per pay per bag per flight, there is no "1 free bag".
do you know if this is correct? if it is, are there any easy ways to reduce the cost (sign up for a loyalty scheme??) It looks like ill be stung (for 2 bags each) $60 pp per flight - NASTY!!
