Combining Miles with Wife

Quick Question -

can I book reward flights for myself and wife and combine our miles?

If so, can I book flights online doing this, or do I need to call the flying club booking line?

e.g. I have 60,000 miles but only need to use 40,000 for flights
the wife has 20,000 miles but needs another 20,000
Can we just book using the combined 80,000?

you can open a family account and combine miles. totally possible to make both your bookings that way. call them up, or write in.

good luck.

I think you're mistaken regarding the family account. Flying Club will however allow you to combine miles from multiple accounts when making a redemption. You can only combine in multiples of the miles required per one-way sector though.

This is correct. Virgin don't have family accounts, you can use miles from multiple accounts for one ticket providing the amount is equivalent to the required one way amount.

And your wife can phone in and give permission for you to spend the miles on her account in order to do this. They just make a note on the account and form then on you're free to do it.

Just a quick update.
We've booked PE from Edinburgh to New York via London.
Cost was 55,000 miles each.
It is NOT possible to simply combine miles to get the 110,000 required.

I had to transfer some of my miles to my wife's account at a cost (not huge).

So, although we had a combined total of 110,000 we still had to have 55,000 each to make the booking.

Strange. I've just been to LA with husband and daughter on reward UC seats and we combined miles without cost as he didn't have enough.

Our last G flight was 2 x UC to JFKwith 100k on my account and the rest on my husbands. I didn't have to give permission, he rang and booked. :D

you know I've only used the flying club line 3 or 4 times to check prices/book flights etc and I have to say just how disappointed I am at the level of knoweldge (or lack of it) that the staff display.

I specifically asked for my miles to combine with my wifes to make the booking and was specifically told that it couldnt be done... so who is correct? The many people here who seem to get flights booked like this, or the person I spoke to on the flying club helpline?

Do you think its worth my while emailing them to see if I can get my £110 fee back for the transfer from my account to my wifes?

Unless the rules have changed, you can only use the miles from one account for any given sector. People who have been allowed simply to pool their miles have been lucky and I don't think it is at all typical.

The knowledge of some of the call centre agents is a real issue (discussed here before). It is best to learn the rules on v-flyer and then phone armed with knowledge.

Can definitely be done, did you make it clear that your wife was travelling with you?

If you need 20,000 each leg , 80,000 in total then you can pay for it either all 80,000 from one

60,000 from one and 20,000 from the other or 40,000 and 40,000.

As long as each person pays at least the cost of one whole leg of your journey

Gosh, well we have been lucky on every occasion then.

I don't even have to ring and give permission. OH simply rings, books and quotes our two FC account details.

I then get an email. This has been the case for a number of years and several flights with us.....

I may be wrong here, but I think there IS a way to combine miles, in unequal ways.. that don't correspond to flight sectors.

The gold card benefit of 'nominated silver' also results in a sort of family account, and permits this pooling of miles. So the gold card holder can for example tap into the silver's account for those few thousand miles needed for a reward.
But I'd have to check the latest Ts and Cs to see if that is still allowed.

But to be fair don't think the query is for a gold card holder...

Household accounts for all tiers of frequent flyer are probably one of the few things that VS haven't done that BA have done for years.

Hmm... :) are you sure that what is happening is not what I wrote -- I.e. that individual sectors are being charged to your accounts in whatever way is possible, but that no one sector is being booked with miles combined from the two accounts?
