Interesting family debate going on here, having roused ourselves from the Gatwick Hilton for a silly-o'clock Thomas Cook flight to Salzburg. Dear wife suggests it would have been better to spend a significant amount of money on a slightly later flight so we could have had an extra couple of hours in bed. And then to rub salt in the wound, it was also suggested that this would be a far more valid reason for spending an extra couple of thousand than 'wasting it on unnecessary upgrades'

Time to throw in the towel perhaps and resign myself to a life in Y?

Although at least my children were most put out that we didn't go to the CH, so maybe there's hope for the next generation

Wow, and I thought that Monarch was the world's worst for legroom. Thomas Cook... take a bow! Only a 90 minute flight, which is at least a small mercy.

Maybe I'm just tired and grumpy...

We flew Thomas Cook to Crete a few years back and I actually laughed when we boarded, thinking the legroom was a joke!

Have a lovely time in Austria!

Ah well, at least we got breakfast, and are here early enough to get a few hours on the mountain today, which is an added bonus. So things looking up now!

if your wife thinks its a waste of money upgrading, then let her sit at the back and you sit up the front. also give her the cash difference and let her "waste it" on new shoes/handbags!

Tried that, not interested in a Mulberry handbag or other similar acoutrements... Guess I just have one that's allergic to spending money. Yeah, grass is always greener etc...

Yeah, ok. She told me that the arrangement with me up front and her down back would be 'fine'. Anyone see any issues, subtext etc with that response?

(Not you Blacky, no offence, but you'd be way down my list as a character witness!).

Anyway, rather more chilled tonight, gluhwein, half a bottle of decent Gruner Veltliner and a good meal, after some loosening blues and reds on the mountain. All's well that ends well. Till the next flight.

Top tip: for future trips, don't consult your spouse.

Tsk! Haven't you learned wife-speak after all these years of marriage? What Mrs PJH meant was "I don't want to seem greedy and grasping after you have shelled out all that cash to spend Christmas with the kids in Oz, but I still expect the usual standard of gifts equivalent to the cost of the GDP of a third world country"

I am currently teaching my son mom-speak which translates readily into wife-speak. Texts from him read "What do you want for birthday and Christmas?" (The two are very close ! ) My response is along the lines of "There's nothing I really need but I wouldn't mind xxxx" (which is something functional like a set of saucepans, the first use of which would be to batter him around the head with them! :0 ). He is learning rapidly! This year's offering was flowers for my birthday and for Christmas some lovely bone china mugs which I had admired recently and a voucher for the local beauty salon. His wife will thank me when he acquires one ):

I've had similar conversations with my Husband. He doesn't understanding upgrading and is quite happy in Y. Mind you he doesn't complain when we are in PE. We've never travelled in upper yet but we will one day

As for Mulberry's don't start me off on that one......
