Going to be arriving mid evening into LAX, mid june, and need to stay overnight then drive off in the morning. What are the best airports in/near LAX (I'm not especially interested in going into the centre of LA...

Thanks.

I always go for Sheraton Gateway. 5 mins from the terminal by shuttle bus. nice hotel. 10-15 minute walk to the car rental centres (or you can go back to the airport and take the rental car shuttle.

Avoid the LAX Hilton (last stayed there on NYE and even as an Au on the Exec floor it was grim).
Never had any problems with the Rennaissance/ Sheraton 4 Points / Marriott all of which are in walking distance of the car rentals.

We always stay at the Marriott LAX right on West Century Blvd, minutes from airport.
They have a Hertz Car hire desk in the lobby which saves going back to the airport to collect a car. Great rates for an overnight stay too.
Within minutes of checking out the next morning, we was on the freeway heading towards Palm Springs :)

We found the Sheraton Four Points great, less than 10 mins walk to Hertz in morning to collect car.

We have started and ended our trips at then Wyndham, now the Radisson right on the edge of the airport. We always enjoy it and when we request terminal view rooms, when my insomnia / jet-lag kicks in I get pleasure just watching the life unfold on the ringroad, and at the air side hubs

Of my many stays at LAX I'd recommend the Sheraton Gateway in agreement with JCBR. It has a decent bar, decent rooms and is very convenient. It was also nicely looked after when I was last there about six months ago. Even as a Hilton Hhonors Diamond I avoid the LAX Hilton (it's dreadful, overpriced, poor rooms, full of conventions and as said above the Exec Floor is very poor).

But here's a thought, since you said 'for the money' ... Santa Monica and Shutters on the Beach isn't that far away, and I am sure there are other options.

Another slightly further out by a few minutes is the beautiful Hacienda, another Hotel I adore very old Californian / Spanish in feel it has several wings to it of differing grandeur.

I tend to stay here:

Just down the road from LAX in Manhattan beach which is a lovely seaside town (or as close as American's get...)

I had to stay one night at the Motel 6 on West Century Blvd. as a last resort. They charge $59 walk up and have a free shuttle bus to and from the airport (lots of hotels don't have free shuttles and a cab will cost you at least $20 one way). Free coffee in the morning and the hotel has just had a refurb (I think someone changed the sheets)I would stay there again if I needed cheap.

Does the Sheraton have the same "on-site" car rental capability that the Marriott has? That makes life much easier for leaving for La Jolla...

Thanks.

Not sure who you're renting with but your options (changing cars/ car choice, upgrades etc) are much better when collecting from the main depots at LAX. Much better IMHO than the on -site cars that are offered (especially if you have status) and worth the (short) walk from the hotel or shuttle back.
