A Few Questions about the Aircraft Names......

Did a search but couldn't find anything so sorry if there is duplication. I get that most are named after their reg e.g G-VSXY Beauty Queen, G-VROY Pretty Woman etc but there are some I don't get.

1. Why are there 2 Ladybirds? G-VAST Lady Bird and G-VBUG Ladybird.

2. How do you get Lady Bird from G-VAST, Ruby Tuesday from G-VXLG and Cosmic Girl from G-VWOW?

Honestly, I have no idea how they get the names..! Does it actually have any reference to the aircraft registration..?

The names/funny registrations is one of my favourite things about VS and harks back to their days as an irreverent upstart, I hope it's something they never stop doing.

I remember the first time I flew with VS as a 10 year-old noticing VFAB and making the connection to "Lady Penelope" then looking at the assortment of other 747s at LGW going off to BOS and the like thinking how much cooler VS was than the other airlines for doing that. That was 20 years ago this year and good old Lady Penelope still going strong too - I seem to be fated to fly on VFAB most times I catch a VS 744 so it will feel strange when she is eventually retired.

G-VXLG- Ruby Tuesday is a Rolling Stones song continuing the trend of using rolling stones songs.

XLG is Xtra Large as a number of the 747's where given named related to the big size.

So hoping for my favourite Lady Penelope to bring me home from NYC as we are scheduled on a 744 on the way back.

I too as a kid loved the Virgin way of doing things. When we used to go the aviation viewing park at LGW my Dad would always tell me the reg, then I would try to guess the name based on that, then look tbrough the binoculars to see if I was right.

Lauren, G-VFAB is a beautiful aircraft. I remember when it was based at Gatwick, flew on it to Antigua.

G-VHOT aka Tubular Belle is a reference to Tubular Bells which was SRB / Virgin's very first record released back in the 70s. Virgin America also has a plane named Tubular Belle.

Miss Kitty was G-VATL delivered in 2003, as originally she was going to be called Atlantic Angel but VS changed her name to commemorate 100 years since the first powered flight by Wilbur and Orville Wright which took place at Kitty Hawk, N.C. in 1903.

Molly was also a competition winner.

Molly (G-VFAR) used to be called Diana, named in 1996 in memory of Princess Diana. I never got the link between the name and reg though?

I do hope that they keep G-VJAM (Lady Marmalade) for one of their 789's - It was due to be allocated to one of the cancelled 346 orders but sadly hasn't been used on any of the new 333's.
It's definitely my favourite so far!
