It's not unusual for an LHR 747 to operate out of LGW. It may be covering due to maintenance, or simply being drafted in to provide extra UC capacity.

I'm flying Montego Bay to LGW on 6th April & that is also using the LHR 747. I spoke to VA about my booking the other day & they confimred that the LHR 747 was covering for a plane that was going in for maintenance.

Not aware of it ever happening the other way around though

I've been on a flight that was supposed to use a LHR aicraft but due to tech problems a LGW 744 was used instead.
The mutiny that ensued wasn't pretty :0 but Mr DL and I did manage to keep our seats in UC. The service on board was abysmal probably due to the large number of UC pasengers who had been relegated to PE and who were VERY unhappy.

I guess the moral of the story is book a seat that is common to both aircraft i.e. downstairs front UC cabin & then you have that seat whichever plane you fly on?

No - it doesn't work quite like that. The seat number configuration is totally different and an aircraft change usully throws all the existing seat allocations back in to the communal melting pot.
