Advise On OLCI - new passport with visa in old passport

I recently read in a post that someone experienced problems with OLCI due to their visa in their expired passport. I have renewed my passport and my current US visa is in my old passport - can anyone tell me if I will have a problem doing OLCI too?

Thanks

Hi Suzy,

That shouldn't be a problem at all.
All you have to do is enter your new passport details and then the visa details when required, as visas and passports aren't linked.
(The only issue would arise if it was an ESTA, this is linked to the passport number so new passport = new ESTA)

Hope that helps!

Dan

What kind of visa are we talking about Suzy?

Dan is correct for the majority of cases (it is still a requirement of most to notify the US embassy/consulate of the ID change), but there are a few that will need to be notified to the US state department for re-issuance to your current passport. It will save a lot of time and trouble at CBP control to have everyone on the same page.

Joeyc, I have a B2 visa. Do I need to advise anyone? I thought I just need to carry the old passport with the new one! Thanks

On your old passport, when the passport office clipped the corners, did they also damage the Visa inside?

If not and the Visa is in tact then the old and new passports will be fine.

If they did clip the visa too, then a new visa will need to be obtained. Went through that nonsense myself with a B-1 visa a while back.

The VWP was a godsend in that regard.

No Joeyc the old passport was returned with visa intact ( I stuck a big note advising there was a current Visa with 8 more years to run)!!! I couldn't bear to spend another day in the US embassy - once every 10 years is enough ;)

Thanks
