If I want to go straight to an UC seat, using an M economy ticket plus miles does there have to be M AND G availability or just G?

Both, but finding an M usually isn't too difficult!

Do bear in mind that some planes have only a 2 class fig (or they did do) so it depends on where you are wanting to fly to.
I've been successful on several occasions booking M fares & upgrading, courtesy of the Upgrade Fairy. However, a couple of times I've taken a chance & booked M fares hoping that a G or two become available & they have. But, I have had to check frequently to see if a G has opened up & been fortunate.
If you go down this route, my suggestion would be to check morning & afternoon. Sometimes a G hasn't been released until a couple of weeks before my flights, & sometimes only a day or two.
Good luck

I also find that booking the cheapest economy class available and then waiting until G becomes available... and then upgrading to M can sometimes save you money.
Granted, the change in fare to M will be priced at the time the G becomes available, which could also work to your great disadvantage, but such is the risk you take.
I find that if a G happens to open up close to departure, it sometimes indicates an otherwise lightly loaded flight, giving you a chance to snag an M change + G upgrade at a very reasonable price.

great, thanks guys.
My return flights open up on the weekend so fingers crossed - the outbound are already open and have availability for the three Gs I need... fingers crossed they are still there if the return leg has viable options on saturday!

Not any more, they don't. The ones that were 2 class have all be retro-fitted to all three cabins.

Is that 'opens for buying tickets' i.e. 11 months away?
And the outbound has 3 Gs?
I'd buy upgradable economy now, grab the outbound and wait on returns. Check daily for availability.

Sorry to ask again about the lettering but I thought I understood but am lost again!
I now, thanks to this sight, know that each ticket comes with a 'letter' and that only certain letters are upgradable with miles.
This is the bit I am still lost on, where do I need to look to see if G's or S's or M's are available.
Many thanks.

Oops. I haven't thought that through have I?
If your return isn't open yet you can't book a return ticket yet.
Good luck when they do open.

You can look for Gs by doing dummy miles bookings for UC and seeing if there is availability.
At the moment the functionality to look for Ss or Ms on the website appears to be broken.
The best thing to do is to call the Upper Class booking line and explain what you want to do and they will sort it all out for you very quickly.
