Best use of miles and how many 'T' fares are available?

Dear all
I am hoping to use my long collected miles (been flying Virgin sporadically for 10 years and never spent a mile) on a reward flight to the US west cost around Christmas. Into LAX around 15/12 and home from LAS around 26/12. I have just over 45000 miles. There is currently availability in economy for 42,500 miles + £255.41 Taxes and surcharges. Is this my best bet? I'd rather fly PE or even pay full fare and upgrade to UC if available. I'd buy the extra 5000 miles needed for a cabin upgrade from Eco to UC. How do I find out how much an upgradeable fare is?
If I select 'flexible' on the VS website it offers me a Y fare at £2193.11 - is there a cheaper upgradeable fare than this?
Also there is the possibility of a reward seat sale. Is there a way of seeing how many T fares there are currently available? I would be tempted to hold off booking if there are several available in case a seat sale comes up. I've tried flightstats.co.uk but it doesn't list T as a fare class.
This will be my first time planning far enough in advance to use some miles so all help and advice will be gratefully received!
Thanks
Ashley
