I'll probably be traveling with someone who may require a wheelchair while in the terminal (they do not use one in their everyday life, but the distances are just too far for them to walk).

Do I just request a wheelchair when I check-in with Virgin? Will I be able to push the wheelchair myself, so that we can go to various places in the terminal (i.e. duty free, get something to eat, etc), or will we be limited to having an airport worker push the wheelchair to the gate, and that's all?

Just want to make sure I plan ahead appropriately.

I would give special assistance a call as soon as possible. They will be able to arrange something.
Asking on the day will risk no assistance being available.

Sorry missed that bit, you could always ask but expect to be followed. probably for insurance or healt and safety as pushing yourself will count as manual handling.

It would kinda suck to be forced to go right through security, and directly to the Gate - without being able to stop for food in a Heathrow restaurant beforehand. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers I'll let everyone know what happens when I come back in June.

Does anyone else have any insight into this?
