V-Flyer

Hi all,

I am just looking at flights for September 2014 from EDI - LHR.

LR prices for Mrs J and I are £196 return, however BA are £326 (almost the same flight times). Even if you were to choose the BA option without paying for checked in baggage, BA are still around £100 more expensive.

How can BA justify charging so much more than the LR service, especially considering they have about twice the capacity on the route!?

With BA charging what they are, which appears to be constant and not a one off 'expensive ticket', has LR really made much of a difference to BA's domestic service on this route?

Interesting to hear your thoughts.

I wish people like me had a choice of the Little Red, we live near Newcastle Airport, and Little Red's are just a future dream for us......Virgin flying in to Newcastle......think they will fly to the moon first!! lol

I had the same observation when booking a work trip to abz, where ba was almost twice as much as LR for a few different days checked. I learned though that some people are used to flying with ba for business and are therefore reluctant to even consider using the LR service. I also know that some are put off by the "operated by aer lingus" line.

Was on the LR to EDI this morning and was pleased to see quite a full load actually. So here's hoping that LR is catching up

Dan, it is a simple case of supply and demand.

It depends on which flight you pick.
I've just booked LHR to EDI on LR
I'm paying £97 return for one person, but different flights would have bumped it up several hundred.
I've also done BA (which I prefer because T5 is easier for me to park a bike) and it was a very similar price.
My sole reason for using LR is to get miles and tier points.

And what, pray, is wrong with Aer Lingus? It's not a bad little airline and certainly way above its compatriot airline. Oh, and it's much better than that snooty BA short-haul - even in Club Europe.

imho a lot of people book BA simply because they want avios/tier points

some colleagues certainly do this, especially since BA made it harder to get/retain higher tier status

in europe BA is mediocre at best, 'club europe' business class is a bad joke, on some flights it's identical to economy with not even an empty adjacent seat, the LHR business lounges are average at best, first lounge is ok but only if it's not rammed with people, in other locations the lounges can be dire, IST for instance

Honey lamb, I'm completely with you on the aer lingus point, but some people just aren't as logical and well informed as the v-flyers... The trouble is, if they simply refuse to fly anything other than ba for domestic travel, then how would these people know what they are missing?

I have managed to convince my colleague to try out LR in 2 weeks time (trust me it took a while), so I do really hope that vs/aer lingus put on the best service together to make me proud!

I don't think Aer Lingus is anything to do with it. It is more lime people are making onward long haul flights with BA or other one world partners and hence the load factors. Despite the bad press BA receives herd from VS fans BA has drastically improved its product recently with lots of new aircraft and they have no problem filling their aircraft
