We'd like to do a road trip from San Francisco to LA, Palm Springs and Vegas - which we've done before a couple of times, but not for a few years. We can't really afford the prices currently being quoted direct to SF in September, and wondered if it would work out cheaper if we flew to, say, New York with Virgin and then got a domestic flight?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

Maybe a bit, but probably not enough to make the extra hassle worthwhile.

I'm seeing about £900 economy for LHR-SFO out on 8th Sep back 22nd. The same dates for NYC is coming in at £600 and the cheapest return from NYC-SFO is £210 so you're saving about £100.

If you've got any VS miles you may be able to save a bit using Miles + Money. Or if you're really looking to save money there's always Norwegian's new no-frills service from LGW-LAX which will cost about £550 in Sep - though you'll pay extra for bags, food & drink etc.

Okay, I see what you mean - and thank you so much for looking up those prices. I don't mind changing, as it breaks up the flight a bit.

I haven't got any VS miles - haven't flown with them with for eight years. But I'm intrigued by your information about Norwegian - never heard of them, but will definitely investigate!

I got SFO return in Upper from BRU in August for £1548.

Good advice for business class, but unfortunately in economy the savings are negligible once you factor in the time and expense of the European leg.

Norwegian are a decent airline - I've not flown long haul with them as the US routes from LGW literally only started a couple of weeks ago using brand new Dreamliners, but I flew to Portugal with them earlier this year and was impressed - new plane, good crew, efficient service and definitely a cut above Ryanair and easyJet. Just make sure you price up all the "extras" like baggage, food & drink etc as they can sometimes make flying on LCCs a false economy.

They also fly to JFK and Fort Lauderdale.
