Just have been watching this on CNN.
Tragic and could well be the end of MA - I know its a state airline but this affect ticket sales so much. Very tragic all round.

Sky News reporting the same, absolutely hideous. At least the passengers won't have known anything about it.

Can't imagine what the backlash will be, especially if this is a state sanctioned surface to air missile rather than separatists.

Isn't it true that Malaysian don't carry some of the techy stuff that helps them to be identified? Maybe it's time all passenger planes are forced to?

It's just awful news, I do hope it's not a repeat of the 1983 Korean flight shot down by the then Soviet Airforce.

A huge loss not only for the people involved but for Malaysian Airlines who have now through no fault of there own lost two 777's so far this year.

Dear lord..... This is terrible. My thoughts are definitely with the families of the poor people on board.

International backlash from this, if it was a Russian provided missile, should be severe. That being said, proving it is not going to be easy.

It would be a colossal shame if this is the end of Malaysian... state airline or not, ticket sales after the events of the past year are going to tank.

It is probably inappropriate to speculate but as the separatists have no aircraft the Ukrainian official forces have no need to resort to using air defence systems. This will have immense ramifications.

It is just ghastly. All those poor people.

Other airlines including VS will now have to re-think the routing they are gonna to take.

A number of airlines have already decided to reroute.

Unbelievably sad news for all families and loved ones. Just hope the truth comes out and appropriate, proportionate action is taken.

Absolutely horrific news. Looking at the wider view of Europe on Flight Radar, virtually all traffic is cautiously steering well clear of the area involved. Hopefully the mindless morons who are to blame for this incident are brought to full and thorough justice...

Virgin have announced via Twitter that flights are re-routing. I think it only affects Delhi and Mumbai as all other route go further north to HKG, PVG and NRT, or south to DXB.

I suspect that the US and Russia know exactly what happened. Satellite intelligence would have been all over this area They are probably manoeuvring over what happens next.

Im quite shocked that this type of thing can still happen in our time.
Fair enough the separatists may have suspected this to be an enemy military cargo plane, but arent there set protocol for making sure the aircraft is properly identified and given a warning to change course or face further action?
So sad though!! Like Bretty said, hope the truth will be out soon and that this doesnt escalate into anything silly.

What is sad the reflection of the news channels reporting. They all seem obsessed with finding out " numbers by nationalities " How about instead mourning the loss of 298 people irrespective of where they come from and start to worry why it was blown out of the sky.

Sadly while it wasnt an airforce it clearly looks now as if a ground to air missile is responsible, my thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones.
