I mentioned this in another thread, but it was the usual PE seat question...

Is there a difference between the IFE screen size between Economy and PE? PE and Upper?

I remember old config, last time in PE. I got the idea that the PE one was bigger than Economy, and went to Upper, it was 14" right? Now 10 or 12?

Or was I just excited?

Really? No reply for this? Nobody knows if there's a difference in the screen sizes between classes?

Or has the forum just become a 787 discussion/Hello from the clubhouse forum...

I think the screens get bigger as you go through the cabins, but I am not completely sure.

10" screen in UC. Used to be 12"? 14"? Basically I think its a tablet under there.

In which case is it a 7" tablet in PE? I'd imagine PE and Economy might be the same, but wasn't sure. Not been in Y since 2007.

Anyone got any pictures which might cover the screen size from trip reports way back? Especially Gatwick ones (LHR ones are probably exactly the same. But are they 10"? The LHR IFE comes from pre tablet days and resistive screens).

It is dependant on the IFE type -

VERA Touch
ECO - 9"
PE - 10.6"
UC - 12.1"

**Diff being on the refurbed LGW fleet that gives 10.6" in UC as opposed to 12.1"

VERA OD
ECO - 9"
PE - 10.4"
UC - 10.4"

Ah ok, thanks (I can't access that link from work, cos it goes via advertiser). But interesting to see that its pretty much the same size between PE and UC on the LGW fleets.

Bigger, but barely noticable between economy and PE as well...

This reminds me of my biggest bug-bare these days, the quality of those screens is SO bad. Flying UC the other week I went from watching on my iPad to then watching something on the IFE and it was like I had taken my glasses of.

Surely they need to be thinking about upgrading these soon to large HD screens, it's yet another way which Virgin's product is showing its age compared to other airlines who are now leading the revolution.

It is quite possible that those screens are high definition, but the media being shown isn't.

I'm not sure if I could tell the difference.

Size a high def file will be 5-6 times the size of a low definition file, they might well have decided to focus on quantity over screen quality...

I agree, technology moves fast but the airlines aren't always keeping up. BA just as bad even in first! The screen on that was soooo fuzzy I didn't bother using it and just read a book.

p.s. Emirates have rather good screens on their A380s in Biz and they're pretty big, I'm guessing 15". And a great selection of films etc.

Surely they should be thinking "why bother?" with the screen hardware and moving to a system of a central server capable of delivering content to the passenger's device, as Virgin Australia have on some aircraft?

Trouble is technology moves so fast now it's impossible for the airlines to keep up.

Just look at the screen quality of the latest iPad compared to the first one - a huge improvement in just 3 or 4 years.

But it just wouldn't be viable for airlines to upgrade their IFE systems that often so they'll always be playing catch-up. Equipment that may be only 3 or 4 years old like Vera Touch already looks dated but I doubt they'll be replacing it any time soon.

They dubbed out all the swear words, but then I guess a lot of airlines do as there's children onboard. I thought the selection was pretty good though, I watched 4 movies on a return flight to Mauritius (4 individual flights) and lately I haven't even bothered to watch anything (I love the downtime on a flight that gives me the chance to actually read a book, something in modern life that seems all too rare having those pesky iPhones to distract me all day long!)

I'm still amused that a five second shot of the Swedish bloke's bare bum in Mamma Mia was edited out on Emirates.

The screens on SQ are immense - full on cinema experience.
15" or 18" in biz, depending on aircraft, and a whopping 24" in F...! I blinkin' love flying on SQ.

And now screening on Emirates - 50 Seconds of Grey. That is all that's left after the censors have finished with it.

I just take my own device, loaded up with whatever I fancy watching
