Helpful and knowledgeable v-flyers,

I have a question on the validity of tier points, and when they get reset to zero.

I have read a long thread on this here as well as the faq, and also the t&c on VS website, but am still not 100% sure.

So:

After a period of no flights on VS, I started flying on 9 May 2014 again, earning TPs.I earned 4 TPs in May.

In June I had a good month, and earned 10 TPs.

In July I collected 2 TPs and therefore reached ag on 23 July.

I have quite a few flights booked in the coming months with VS, and will probably be booking more quite soon which will mean that I should comfortably get to 40 TPs in a 13 month period between 1 June 14 and 30 June 15.

2 questions

1) are TPs valid for exactly 12 months or between 12 and 13? I think the latter but the faq here says the former.

2) will my TPs be reset to zero after the end of May 15? Or will I be ok for AU in June? Based on the calculator on my FC page, the TPs don't seem to be reset but over time I have grown a little distrustful of the VS website...

Let's assume, for the moment, you are not going for Au. It might be easier to think of TPs lasting 365-395 days (give or take leap years etc) rather than to think of 12-13 months.

They last up to the end of the month in which you earn them, the following year. Earn a TP at any point in May, 2014 and it will last until 31 May, 2015.

What confuses the issue is that once you reach Au, they all re-set to zero, no matter when you earned them. You might have earned all 40 TPs in May 2014: your account will qualify for Au on 31 May, 2014 and your account will re-set to zero on 1 June, 2014.

Once the account is re-set to zero, you start earning TPs again, and you will remain Au for a full 13 months (in the above example until 30 June, 2014).

In your specific case, if your first TP cleared on 9 May, 2014 you have until 31 May, 2015 to reach 40 TP and achieve Au.

If you achieve Au by 31 May, 2015 then all your TPs will re-set to zero on 1 June, 2015, and you will have until 30 June, 2016 to achieve Au or Ag. During that period you will remain Au.

If you do not achieve Au by 31 May, 2015, then you will lose the TPs you earned in May 2014. So when you log-on on 1 June, 2015 you will see that your TPs have dropped by 4 (the 4 TPs you earned in May, 2014).

If you have achieved Ag by 31 May, 2015, then your Ag will be renewed on 1 June, 2015 and will last until 30 June, 2016. Your TPs, however, will not be re-set on 1 June, 2015. But - again - you will lose the 4 TPs you earned in May, 2014.

So if I may recap what you have said - generally the TPs will last to the end of the month in which they are earned the following year, except when AU is achieved.

This makes sense as it agrees to what the FC page says, but I think there's a small error in the faq on this topic on this site. When I'm not on my phone I will post a link.

Yes, that's right.

Everything is based on the end of the month, with one exception: your miles after three years of non-accrual.

If you fly today, 9 November, 2014, and don't do anything else to gain more more miles (either flying or via partners), those miles will expire on 9 November 2017.

This, quoted from the FAQ, is wrong: "...TP are only valid for 12 months at a time. So if you earned 5 TP for a qualifying flight on 8th May 2004, they will disappear from your account on 9th May 2005."

What it should say is: "...if you earned 5 TP for a qualifying flight on 8th May 2004, they are valid until 31st May 2005, and will disappear from your account on 1st June 2005 (assuming you don't achieve Au in the interim)."
