Haven't been to DC for a while but we stayed at the Normandy Inn which is a short walk from DuPont Circle. Felt safe, there were lots of Embassies. DuPont Circle itself was lively, lots of places to eat. A few stops from the sights, we were able to do some of the usual suspects in a day. Sure there are better options, although the hotel looks like it has been updated. Only downside was the super long escalators at the Metro that start off outside then go underground/inside, quiet strange.

I only ever stay at the Tabard Inn in DC. It's very quirky and truly wonderful.

Lovely large rooms (no TVs), fast wifi, great Bar and restaurant and amazing breakfast. It's not your average hotel

I'm a big fan of the Kimpton hotels, they have several in D.C. if you join their loyalty scheme before you go (for free) you get free wi-fi and a $10 mini bar credit whenever you stay too.
