Once I'm airside can I go back outside?

Once I'm through and in the clubhouse, can I get back outside as long as I go through security again?

I think it is possible but increasingly difficult ... in T3 you used to go to the flight connections area and through a door at the back into the security area for connections, from which you could exit to the immigration hall, then the baggage hall and then out.

The last time I did it you had then to go back to VS check in and get a new BP to regain access through security.

An update would be most useful if this is still possible.

I tried last time I flew from LGW and trust me I tried every trick/fluttering of eyelashes I could think of and didn't manage it :( I was flying UC and even asked the CH ladies if there was a special "trick" and got a flat no every time.

Time to fly out of Manchester instead. (There is an airside smoking place, in T2 at least).

Legally they can not stop you and the airlines may not like it and they can make it a difficult process.

Plus if you were to go back land side and have problems getting back through security and you missed your flight they would have to do nothing to rebook you.

At LHR T5 for example they only take people back out through Immigration and customs (yes you have to pass through both) on an hourly basis. BA has to uncheck you in for your flight and reissue your BP. It's possible you might lose seat assignments as well as being at the head of the queue in a denied boarding situation if they needed to take people off a flight due to over selling.

You then have to meet the conformance criteria when going back in through security within the time limits etc after you have been outside.

At LHR, there are also some unofficial methods of getting landside (i.e. without being escorted).

I've never used them when I need to return back airside though.

What do other smokers do when they fly? I presume stock up on nicotine replacement therapies?

I suspect airport branches of Boots have a big selection available! ):

Without trying to preach to any smokers on here I think it really is a case of mind over matter ,I was a heavy smoker for 25 yrs until I gave up some 15 months ago , yes I would chain smoke 2/3 ciggies before going through security but then for me it was a case of I can't have one til I reach my destination and there's nothing I can do about it so live with it ,certainly discovering the delights of various VS clubhouses helped aswell

I gave up three years ago after nearly 50 years of 30 a day!
It was long haul flights that made it easier - I reasoned that if I could survive a long flight without falling apart then it was not as vital as I thought. I eventually promised myself that I would not smoke all day, but have one before going to bed. By the time bedtime came I was so exhausted I could not be bothered. Each day became easier. Now almost three years later I still have a passing fancy now and again, but I am not going too risk it!
Just thought I'd share in case it helps........
