The free XE Currency app is worth having I think even if not buying currency from them but only for reminding yourself of local currency to home currency rates when shopping on holiday.
A friend swears by Onavo, a free app that supposedly reduces the amount of roaming data charges by somehow compressing or reducing the amount transferred when Spacebooking or whatever - but I've not tried it myself.
I used WiFi Finder recently, also a free app, instead to find wifi hotspots when abroad but may give Onavo a try next time I'm abroad as finding free wifi not that easy outside EU or your Carib hotel.
Afraid I'm not an Apple user but the above are supoosed to be available for iphones.

Depending on how many flights you take, I find FlightTrack really good for showing your upcoming flights immediately in a widget (and syncing to their status/delays etc); it feeds of Tripit. It often updates me on delays and gate changes faster than the airline does.
If you have happen to Amex Platinum, then the Boingo app is useful, as it automatically connects your phone to a Boingo wifi provider anywhere in the world (which is free with Amex Platinum).
In terms of transit apps, I really like CityMapper which works for London, NYC, Philly, Boston, DC, Chicago, Mexico City (DF), LA, SF, Manchester (UK), Madrid, Paris, Hamburg, Barcelona, Berlin,Milan, Rome.
I hate to say it but the VS app is the least useful and - in my case - goes wholly unused!

XE
Flight track
Roamer (a free calls app for when you are abroad).
Foursquare - great for finding what's nearby, plus it has offers with Amex from time to time.
Ical - I love it and subscribe to lots of calendars which are colour coded. Best thing I ever got into since ditching the filofax.
Weather app - add your holiday/trips and watch the weather.
Passbook.
Ringgo - for parking in the UK without cash.
Shazam - I hate it when I can't put the name to the song.
Tripit
Starwalk
0800 Wizard
Don't forget to enable your sim lock - settings, phone, SIM pin. If you lose your phone they can't run up a huge bill.
Being down in Cornwall we don't have much in terms of the Taxi apps but if you are near a big city you should download them all. Usually they offer a free credit.

WeQ4U is another good one.....avoid all those pesky 08 numbers charges when dialing from your mobile as well as it queues for you if you get stuck in a call centre queue.
It converts many many 084 and freephone numbers into 03 numbers so they are included in your call allowance.

More UK and London centric, but I use the National Rail app and TubeMap a lot...

XE currency
Tripit
Tripadvisor
Open Table (there UK & US specific versions but you can only download UK version from App store)
Yelp
Tube Map for London travel, includes a route planner which is great
Your Passenger Rights - an app for EU laws relating to travel with airlines, trains etc.
Pack My Bag - packing lists for those packing cubes!!
Tip and Split - for calculating tips, and especially if you're splitting a bill calculating everyone's (equal) share
Heathrow Express - you can book straight through the app and add your tickets to Passbook
Hotels.com - although I tend to use the website via Shops Away portal for collecting miles, I use the app for any modification of bookings and to add bookings to Passbook
Expedia
In addition I tend to look for and download apps specific to where I'm travelling - travel guides etc. So for instance for my trip to Japan there are some apps for trains and the Tokyo subway, translation apps, tourist guides of different cities.

For me, I have an iPhone5 and these are what I couldnt do without:
Travel Related:
+1 for TubeMap
HHonors (Hilton)
And a paid for app called BusChecker, which gives you real time running info for every bus stop in the country!
SNCF App is pretty good if you can understand some basic French when navigating the railway in France as I frequently have to do!
The new VS app is a thousand times better than the old one, but BA and EasyJet are still miles ahead!
None Travel:
Facebook - What it says on the tin!
Spotify - I cant be without some music!
MyFitnessPal for logging and tracking calories if that's your sort of thing!
LinkedIn - very good Professional social networking site!!

That may have finished at the end of December 2014 according to some reports, but others say it's still on....
