Goodness gracious -BOAC I bet there aren't many v-flyers who have even heard of that name ;)

I was surprised that the company ever owned a 747 coz didn't they stop operating as an airline in the early 70's?

ps enjoy PE & Cancun - personally I'm still one of those passengers who would always choose upstairs in the bubble :)

Is there PE in the Upper deck?
I thought the LHR planes only had Upper and Economy.
I have only flow PE on the Gatwick configuration which does have PE upstairs and for that I would always choose row 19 downstairs.

Cancun is from Gatwick and as it happens my last VS trip from Gatwick was to Cancun in PE on the Upper Deck. Personally I prefer PE on the upper deck although when given the option on a 747 I've never opted to stay downstairs.

Upper deck feels more relaxed and quiet and although from LGW the front half if PE and the back half is Economy there really isn't any telling...its still fairly quiet

My travel companion was actually offered a job with them as an air hostess, as they were called - ALL those years ago!! She didn't take it in the end which was a good job as they went bust the following year ):

BOAC 747s

BOAC had 11 747-100s in its fleet; the first went into commercial service on 14 April 1971, after protracted negotiations on pay rates and crew numbers.

As a point of interest, BOAC had accepted delivery of Concorde, and would have been the first operator if not merged to create BA in 1974.

BA's first Concorde had the registration G-BOAC.

Enjoy your flight, I think the IFE will be a little different to your trip to JNB. y)

I am old enough to remember BOAC and BEA - for years we had a BEA flight bag, no idea how we came by it or where it went. Died of old age I suspect. And there was Pan Am.

My wife flew to South Africa with BOAC on a VC10. The bag may still be the loft, and we found this menu

Disadvantage of Upper Deck is very delayed in getting off, losing the priority disembarkation...

However, last time in Cancun, they made the queue stand for an hour before processing _anyone_. So having been in UC, still meant I stood for an hour... I guess at the end of the Upper deck, it would have been about an hour and 20/30.

So did I. August 12th to be exact . It was a DC10 and very roomy. Beef stroganoff and free glass of wine. Afternoon tea of sandwiches and cake. Two hours to get through immigration.
Some things never change !

I flew with Laker on a DC10 to LAX in about 1980/1981 - I was 13 at the time and was invited to the flight deck where I was allowed to sit in the captain's seat and he showed me all the controls - those were the days!

Other memory I had was that the LAX arrivals hhall was little more than a huge domed tent!

We always used to choose the bubble when it was PE only and I. On our last trip to Cancun in PE we chose seats downstairs on the way out and in the bubble on the way back. It meant we were off the plane really quick when we arrived in Cancun to beat the immigration queues and we had the quieter cabin for the night flight home. If we fly PE again on this route I would do the same. The downstairs cabin was still pretty quiet on the day flight.
Really looking forward to our next flight to Cancun in May as I managed to get two S to G's upgrade for just the dates we wanted. It will be my husbands first flight in Upper.
