Looking through T&Cs for travel insurance it seems that expensive watches are not covered anywhereas most policies only cover single items up to £300-400.

This is not something I have ever looked at before but it caught my eye today when I was scanning through my annual policy from my bank so I looked at a few others too.

I wear an Omega watch daily but also take a more sporty Tag Heuer with me for when I go swimming. My wife wears a Tag also. So if something were to happen to any single watch (or god forbid all 3!!) then I would not be covered!

Does anybody know of a way of insuring these? I preferred not knowing, now I am super paranoid

My wifes engagement ring is insured worldwide as part of my home insurance, had to declare it specifically and my policy covers it globally. Adds quite a bit to my insurance each year but its better than risking it on travel insurance

you can get travel insurance with extra cover, but if values are high you may need to use a broker

as above, i take high value items and they are covered under my household contents insurance with a policy extension to give global cover, i have to declare the high value items and it plumps up the premiums, but if you travel a lot it can be a good option (i've got other cover for health, disruption etc. etc. via amex)

Ah yes good point. Just noticed that my home insurance includes worldwide cover for high value items. Feel happier now!

Generally if your home insurance covers high value items outside of the house it applies worldwide, mine does, but it is worth checking.

We had to send in a copy of the receipt for my husbands Tag that is kept on file with the house insurance, but now you have mentioned it I will just check to make sure that its covered worldwide. Thanks for the heads up.

We both wear Tags, 'he' has more than one (to compensate for my diamonds? ). We have home contents which specifically covers these away from home. They are specified on the policy, with serial numbers for the watches.

i added worldwide watch cover to our home insurance.
not just for travel but for any issue.

dont forget, you may need to declare the items on your home insurance. I have to for any single items valued at over £1000

My watches are not high value, but I do take two on holiday.
I take a photo of my watch case before I go to avoid any nasty discussions with customs as to why I have a second boxed watch in my carry on.

You need to be careful with claiming on your home contents insurance though. A £1500 water damage claim five years ago has easily cost us £2000 in raised premiums since, including a year where we could only get insurance if we had a monitored alarm system. Quite how a burglar alarm which connects to a call centre has anything to do with a blocked drain I have no idea.
