The curse of HL strikes again lol . Dragonbaby's just checked in at LAX but was intercepted on her way to the UC check in and condescendingly advised that " economy check in is over there" by a VS representative ( the assumption clearly being based on how she looks).
Cue a smile from DB and the immortal words " but I'm not flying economy .. ..."
Now on her way to The Loft .

Oh, I just love it when that happens just to see the look of confusion on the the agent's face and the hasty way that they try to back-track and pretend all along they really knew you were in UC.

Had a similar experience at the hotel we're staying when attempting to have a drink on the roof terrace bar. Intercepted by clipboard wielding 20 year old sweetly asking 'and how can we help you tonight?' 'By taking my drink order, as a guest at your hotel?' I replied. She looked confused, as well she might, as I think her real question was 'how may I get rid of you, you who are clearly neither skinny nor under 30?'

It is quite funny when it happens .I had it at HKG in Feb from Mr and Mrs Middle England " are you looking for the Club check in " ? ( when we were travelling in F - we obviously looked like the Clampets lol ) . Mrs Middle England's noise was visibly wrinkling ....When advised ( politely ) that I was actually looking for the F check in they looked a tad shocked .
Paul I too feel the pain of being over 30 and no longer skinny - console yourself with the thought that we too were once those beautiful people ........

We had it happen in HK boarding for Oz when informed "Sir, Madam this is for Upper Class boarding" - husband's response "Yes thats why we're in it" & continued walking ignoring flustered apologies.

Love it when this happens....it is just the sheer panic on the persons face when they realised they've got it badly wrong

We had a tiny issue waiting to board at MCO last month.
We had been delayed boarding and as we were in 6A 6K I like to get on early to get overhead space.
So we were standing in the queue. In fairness there were some PE passengers and the ground staff were trying to get the Uppers on first and escorted another passenger to the queue almost pushing me out of the way. As I had my boarding card and passport in hand I just held up my boarding pass in their way and they were slotted in behind me with an apology.
We enjoy travelling and do tend to dress smartly so it does slightly miff me when something like that happens.

And they wonder why they need to put signs up saying "Thou shalt not abuse staff" ! ! !

Nicely handled DB. Many years ago my husband and I were both travelling F SYD to LHR and on arrival at the airport my husband (slightly in front of me) was sent to Y check in but I was directed to F!!!! We were laughing so much we couldn't be cross.

I'd like to think she's been well trained - being polite and pleasant costs nothing .
She works as a waitress part time and says that she's stunned at how rude people can be !

In some respects I'm genuinely surprised that any airline staff use appearance as an indicator of the cabin a passenger is in these days. I'll look forward to all my approaches to the check-in desks this year!

This has happened to me quite regularly. It's not just airline staff -- I've been shoved out of the way whilst in the priority boarding line...

It's not terribly surprising. I'm often amazed at the slovenly look of air passengers - wearing pajamas, carrying a pillow in one hand, and a pair of headphones in the other.

Mind you, I'd never assume anything. It's like asking an overweight woman what her due date is... just... don't... do it...

Well done Dragonbaby, nicely done. I can't stand condescending customer service, especially that which is based solely on appearances. It's insulting.

How easy can it be to ask "May I help you, which cabin are you travelling in?". Presumptuousness is very poor behaviour.

As to be over 30 and skinniness being a somewhat distant recall (I do have the pair of jeans in the wardrobe one the 'eternally optimistic' rack though) - what we may lack in youth we certainly have in stamina, drinking that is!

I'm amazed that it's not part of basic training to approach pax along the lines of Slinky's suggestion. Maybe the offenders only do it once and the embarrassment teaches them but it is such poor PR and tarnishes the brand.

Hee Hee, it does make me chuckle. People do love to make assumptions about others. In my working life I have met many a wealthy individual who would easily pass themeselves off in a crowd and people full of airs and graces who don't have a penny to their name. Never, ever assume.

One thing I can't stand is people judging other people.
Especially in a job like they are doing, I would find it totally unacceptable behavoir.

Luckily, I can read & write, as well as follow signs & instructions.
If I needed any special assistance, then I am also aware I should make flying club know beforehand.

Reminds me of a contract win dinner I was once out on & our boss asked how much the champagne was. Waiter responded if one has to ask, then maybe one should not buy. Boss told him to bring a bottle & put 2 on ice. Paid the bill & left no tip.

So can I, but my "incident" occurred at a time when there was a security check at the entrance to check-in. I arrived at the entrance to UC with teenage Aer John in tow at the exact time that a family headed by a blazer and cravatted gentleman arrived at the adjacent PE entrance, the two manned by the one person. She swithered between the two of us before selecting the family with a cheery "Travelling in PE, sir?" and proceeded to process them before turning to me and, in patronising tones suggesting that we were obviously in the wrong place, asked if we were flying economy - after all, in her opinion, a mother and teenager did not belong in UC!

The evil part of me really enjoyed her discomfort when she realised she had made a major error of judgement!

Other passengers can make the same assumption.

We were in the VA shared lounge at McCarran and a family opposite us gave us the beady eye for most of the time we were sat in the lounge. When pre-boarding came we all left the lounge. UC were ask if they would like to board and we said excuse me to the family and went past. My wife heard the son asked why we were going through for the mother to say "Oh, they must be in UC". I'm guessing they had paid to sit in the lounge but were in either PE or Economy.

We've also the ground staff make the "They're not UC." assumption.

Been there a few times as well.

My favorite was once when arriving into LHR and enquiring why Revivals was closed, I was told "Revivals is for passengers traveling on business" as if flying in from SFO necessitated that I be a tourist. (Half the year Revivals is closed when coming in from SFO since they shift schedules about.)
