Upgrading Issues

Hello,
Just spoke to VS CS... I wanted to fly to DC on an M fare, back from JFK on an O then uprgade the outbound to UC with 20,000 miles and the difference in tax. The agent said this was not possible and I needed an M & an X fare. This put the cost up by an additional £80.
Is this right?!
Thanks,
Mike

Well considering that it's the M fare that's upgradeable it shouldn't matter what the other fare bucket is, but it may be there were no X fares left and O was the next available bucket.

Thanks Bretty. It's the other way around - O was coming out cheaper. Even when I price a standard return it's putting the flight into the O category so I'm sure why they can't ticket an M and an O. Might try tomorrow with another agent.

if you want UC, it might be worth asking the agent to be put through the UC department for your booking. They seem more clued on.

Thanks all. Called again and all sorted. It did work out slightly cheaper than I originally calculated because I'd added too much tax for the M->G upgrade. Does anyone have any hard numbers of the diff in tax? I priced a miles only Econ and a miles only UC and worked out the difference. Apparently that's not the way to do it...

£71 of the difference will be UK APD (a proper tax). You'll have already paid £71 in your original booking but the rate for premium cabins is double the economy rate.
The rest of is is down to VS
