Just a reminder for anyone hiring a car that from today (8th June), the paper counterpart of a UK photo card driving licence becomes redundant with all the info such as types of vehicle you are can drive and penalty points now been stored electronically so you will now need to request an electronic share before you pick up a hire car rather than just producing your counterpart.

The electronic share also only lasts for 72 hours so you are going to have to remember to do this a few days before you pick up your car.

(from my own experience, I've never been asked to show my counterpart when hiring a car in the US even though I've always taken it with me, but it's much better to be prepared)

Good to know, I've never been asked (like you) for my paper part anywhere.
One year in the algarve I forgot my entire licence, they still let me drive away with the promise of emailing a copy to them. My fluency in Portuguese definitely helped in that situation!

Still got the original paper one i.e non photocard license. Havent moved address since early 90s!
Assume the old style paper licenses are not impacted for car hire?

Older paper licences not impacted by this though you can also view your info online for those now.

The only thing impact on paper licences is that from today any penalty points added to those will no longer be physically added to your paper licence itself anymore and will now only be added to the info available online.

I've never been asked to show my counterpart in the USA and having done the Alamo online check-in I seriously doubt the man at the exit barrier is going to ask for my one-time passcode.

My personal opinion of the OTP is it's nonsense. It's so you can give somebody access to view your driving details online, those driving details give away most of your personal details anyway. So instead of providing the company with the OTP you could simply just type in your National Insurance number for them and they'll get access that way. So I'm not going to bother with it.

What a shambles, none of the 2-3 routes that I might use to get the relevant information or code from the DVLA work. They either time out, say I don't exist (slightly worrying) or return an error code. Idiots the lot of them...

Does this apply if your paper counterpart is still current? As previously mentioned too, we have never been asked for the paper part, I wonder if some of the good folks in the U.S. are even aware of its existence!

We're flying to Vegas in July and are hiring car with Hertz this time. It's more expensive than Alamo via virgin but I hate the way you have to pick up the car at the airport. Too jet lagged (erm...and maybe slightly over the limit ) to do it when we land and a pain to go back there after 2 nights to set off to California.
Anyhow..back to my point...I called hertz in the US and we do not have to bother with the stupid code. I thought as much as they've never asked to see the paper part in the 20 years we've been going there.

Officially now, the paper counterpart does not exist at all !

the original suggestions was to shred it .

As most of the UK is not aware of it I would be amazed if the US was.

Well Enterprise in Wigan aren't aware of it.

I've just collected a rental car (my Audi has been in the wars so is at the car body hospital) and they haven't been trained on the new code from DVLA. The agent did thank me for educating him on the why's and wherefore's of it all.

It is indeed. Car hire and Wigan. Two concepts I'd never really associated with each other before.

I know...especially when you add the famous pies...there's a thought.

Looking around the forums It looks like this is not required for hiring in the US.
