Value of "Premium Economy Reward Upgrade"

Hi,

I'm trying to fathom out what the real value of this is.

Spend £10,000 on card purchases on the Virgin Atlantic White American Express® Credit Card, or £5,000 on the Virgin Atlantic Black American Express® Credit Card by the end of any year and you will receive a Premium Economy reward upgrade that, subject to availability, enables you to convert an Economy reward redemption (an Economy flight bought with your Flying Club miles) into a Premium Economy reward redemption on Virgin Atlantic.

Since Las vegas is a regular trip for me, I will use it as an example...

A return to Las Vegas in Economy, purchased using miles is 42,500 miles + X taxes.
A return to Las Vegas in Premium Economy, purchased using miles is 70,000 miles + Y taxes.

Clearly, this makes the voucher worth 27,500 miles (unless I am mistaken?), but what about taxes?

Would I end up paying X or Y?

As an aside, am I right in thinking that any reward flight does not yield any miles or tier points?

Thanks :)

Hello

You pay Y taxes and earn no points or miles.

There must be a PE reward seat available but the redemption costs you the economy miles.

Very good use of miles when there is a redemption sale on so you need fewer miles.

You have to ring up to book but be aware that not all agents seem to know the rules about these vouchers. Just be persistent and/or ring back and hope for another agent.

You would pay the PE taxes (which includes the extra APD for non economy cabins)

As already said...
You pay PE Taxes & E miles.
Virgin will happily split the redemption for 2 people to travel 1 way if you ask them.

Also they are of really good value when there is an economy reward seat sale. Think my lasts pe upgrade cost me 18.5k miles for the ec seat and then the additional taxes for the pe seat. That was one way.

You can also split the vouchers to upgade 2 seats one-way - in the recent rewards sale I booked 2x ec for me and husband LHR-JFK and upgraded the overnight returns to PE. I did have to be very persuasive with the agent that this was possible and then very patient while he got computer to say yes! He'll know for next time. :-P

Under the rules we play by this flight is too short to justify UC but the vouchers may well come in handy for a little more comfort on longer day flights. Waiting for the next rewards sale...

Yes I have two vouchers that we are looking to redeem during the next reward sale (imminent we hope!)
Best value than buying at full price.

You can always miles boost the flight, which is what we have done before to reward flights

Thanks for the information - much appreciated.

I've had the (white) card 5 months and already half way to second voucher.

Interesting that you can still buy miles booster on a reward flight - that's handy since it is a pretty cheap way of buying miles by the looks of it.

It's especially good value if there's a Miles Booster promotion. Unless you urgently need the miles, I wouldn't boost anything until a promotion comes along. You're able to boost any flights you've taken in the last six months (as well as future flights you have reserved).

My OH has a trip to JFK in November, which I purchased in the sale earlier in the year and then boosted when the 20% bonus came around.

I now have a trip to LAS in November, which I have already decided to wait for the bonus before boosting - or if 6 months comes around will buy before then. :)

I think you can buy a booster after you have taken your flight as well. Not sure what the cutoff point is though.

we have used the Vouchers a few times and find them good value - however - the PE seats can not then subsequently be upgraded to UC.

I am yet to travel in UC and have only travelled in PE twice - so PE is still a worth upgrade for me from Economy!

In all honesty, being a regular visitor to Vegas, I am not sure that I would fly UC from LGW to LAS - PE strikes me as being plenty good enough for a day time flight*. UC on the way back however would be good.

* Subject to change once I have travelled UC - I might change my mind!

I dont think I would bother with UC unless it was a 12hr flight or if I needed a bed to sleep. Really don't see where the value is.
