I am sure the answer has to be yes (despite what some people may think about potentially noisy babies in Upper Class)...

Can an infant under 2 sit on the parents lap in Upper Class? Only asking because of the airbag seatbelts - not sure how safe that would / would not be if the airbag was to deploy.

Hi if was on vs3 to New York and a fellow passenger done exactly this.

Looks ok as a lap infant but not in a car seat - as you say due to the air bag

Yes you can, have done this multiple times. Albeit this is not an easy task.

Thanks for the replies - the info is not for me, but for a friend who is moving back here from Dubai.

Think I am going to burn 40k miles & get her a seat in Upper for the flight. Emirates want about £500 one way in Economy (with 30kg baggage allowance). I can get her in Upper for 40k miles (which she can have) plus about £150 in taxes. She then gets 3x32kg baggage allowance for herself, plus 1x23kg allowance + a car seat or pushchair for baby.

You should see what Emirates charge for excess baggage too. Including the online advance booking discount, it's around £500 for 30kg. That Upper reward seat with it's huge baggage allowance is an absolute steal.

Whilst I appreciate the flight will be on an UCDS equipped aircraft, it's got to be easier with a baby on your lap in Upper than in Economy - surely?

Definitely easier in Upper. Much easier around meal times. Meal times in Economy with an infant on your lap is a real challenge. For us it all got harder as the baby got older towards age 2 and was more mobile and didn't want to be restricted by a seat belt which often caused frustration. As a 2 year old, next time we fly will be first trip in her own seat but this time we will be in Premium, as I'm not sure how she'd be in the the larger Upper seat on her own at take off etc.

The 787 does also have very spacious overheads.

When we travelled in Upper last year to LAX on a 747 there was a child of about 3 or 4 and the parents/grandparents had great difficulty ingetting her to remain belted up in her seat for landing. The grandparents ended up stretching over the partitions either side to try and hold her in the seat. They were in the front of the forward cabin with the parents opposite. Not an easy task for any of them and would probably have been better in PE.
