US Car hire. Do we need a DVLA code?

Title says it all really. I do know hire companies in the UK are asking for the code to check my licence but has anyone ever been asked for it in the US.
I'm not travelling for a couple of months but I'll add it to my planner if I need to get one.

I would take one just in case - but when I hired a car in the US back in August I wasn't asked for one.

We did not take a code and were not asked for one by Alamo in November. We did online check in which allowed us to go straight to the garage to select a car. The only check was at the garage exit.

Not been asked for one, been through MCO twice in last 3 months, only want to see plastic photo license, if you book through ALAMO.co.uk you can get a great deal, no need to pre-pay, also, if you search you can get a free second driver. All your credit card details and driver license details for two drivers can be entered at pre-check in, then skip Alamo counter, pick chosen grade of car and go straight to exit kiosk with your licenses and credit
card, we have done this now at MCO for the last 10 visits. Also, if using Alamo, join Insiders, all your license details can entered at registration.

I normally hire through Hertz and never even see a member of staff at the rental counter , just receive a txt with where my car is and what it is, drive out show photocard license to the barrier person and off we go.

I also booked through VS last week for MCO and it was supplied by Alamo. once the booking was confirmed I checked in online with my driving licence number and it specifically said they do not need the counterpart or DVLA. I picked the car up from The Hyatt on I drive and the agent never even asked to see the photo card licence.

Can't comment on any other companies.

If you've got a data connection on your smart phone you can request the code at the counter if needs be.

I didn't need one at MIA yesterday with Alamo.

As I'd done the online check-in with them it was simply a case of walking down to the garage and pick which ever car I wanted (from the choice of 3 economy models, as that's all they had left), drive to the barrier and hand over my photo driving licence card & credit card and off I went.

This what it says on the Hertz website
"Important Notice for Customers with UK Driving Licences issued in Great Britain
From June 8th 2015, the paper counterpart of the UK photo card driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by the DVLA. This change applies to Great Britain only and not Northern Ireland.
From June 8th when renting in the UK, Angola, Bahrain, Balearics, Botswana, Canaries, Croatia, Namibia, Oman, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden and Tunisia, all drivers with a UK licence (Great Britain) will need to provide evidence of any driving endorsements. This also applies if you have a paper licence that was issued before 1998."

Used Hertz twice in the USA since the June ruling and all they wanted was my driving licence and credit card.

Picked a car up yesterday from Alamo at Hilo added an extra driver there and then and all they wanted was driving licence photo card and a credit card. Took the DVLA code with me just in case but was never asked for it.
