A pleasant surprise (for me, that is)

I needed to be in New York for a few days in August and have been contemplating what strategy I would use to get there.

For the past 4 years, I've been BA silver and that has worked well for me, but with the recent changes to BAEC my personal ambition to retain silver has been diminished and this has given me the freedom to look beyond OneWorld.

I've been fishing around looking for flight options for a few weeks - would I try ex-EU? Would I just fly BA? Would I use some avios etc?

Ex-EU was coming up with good prices, but could I be bothered with the extra hastle as it is just me travelling?

BA reward flights - well, I'd rather keep the Avios for using in conjunction with the AMEX 2 for 1 voucher on a family trip...

And then - "oh wait, I still have some VS FC miles don't I"?

Logging on to my FC account (after requesting a new password as I had forgotten it), I discovered 85k miles tucked away.

Oh well, here goes nothing, I'll call VS - but I've never had very much luck with reward flights in the past and reports on V-Flyer aren't positive...

"Yes, sir, we have availability on those dates, which flight do you want"?

Amazing! There was a UC G available to me on 3 different flights on the exact dates I wanted!

No brainer - UC with two great club houses - So, it's booked!

I'll be flying UC for the first time in over 3 years, even better, the return is currently scheduled to be a dream liner (haven't flown in one yet).

The outbound will currently be an A340 apparently, so hopefully won't have to deal with the dream suite!

Let's hope I hit the upward curve of consistency on these flights and I get a glimpse of the old VS spirit I enjoyed for so many years.
