Flights to Cuba - New Policy?

Flights to Cuba using cash or cash plus miles to upgrade cannot be booked direct with VS anymore and have to be made by calling VH. It also means Miles Plus Money is no longer available for flights to Cuba. I was initially told that this was due to using Delta's US booking system however having pointed out you can go to the Delta website and book flights from the US to Cuba was then told it was a new policy. Not sure if this is a permanent thing or not. Will find out in a couple of weeks how well trying to book a PE W or S and upgrade to UC using miles goes. Wish me luck!

There's no way this can be a new policy.

Staff just creating a reason to fit the circumstances!

It seems no one knows what the situation is as the SM team have now said VH cannot book any reward seats which means booking a W and upgrading to a G at the time of booking is no longer possible

Edited to add they have said VH will do their best to book you in an upgradeable fare

I got a reply from business support. When they bought the Delta system this was not an option for Virgin as Delta was not able to book flights to Cuba. Since then Delta can now book these flights. VS are hoping that this will be an option for us in the near future but as it stands for now they cannot book cash or cash plus miles flights.

I know, they have been available to book on the Delta site for quite some time now too

This, I have to say, is amateurish.

That's being polite

My allegiance to VS is somewhat diminished given all the issues after the system upgrade and the Cuba issue given I fly there in UC twice a year amongst all the other flights with them to the US and Dubai

Update - been on phone to VH who wanted to charge me £400 more to book flights than the price published on the VS website >-( Finally booked and what an experience that was to get a UC I fare code as VH were insistent they could only book Z ;-(
