Flights from LAX to Australia - any tips?

I've just been lurking for ages but now I have a reason to post again! My brother is gifting me a ticket to go see my best friend in Australia this August - woo hoo! I'll be travelling from LAX to Melbourne, and I'm trying to get the best price possible. I need to keep it at around $1,000 on an economy ticket with hopes that I can save up to purchase some extra leg room (I was so spoiled on our last trip in PE!)
Any tips on when I should be looking for fare sales? Should I stick with Virgin Australia or look at United or Quantas seriously? I did see that there are some less expensive ones on Air New Zealand but those have a stop over in Aukland and then its another 4 hour flight.
