Miles redemption

Hi,

Want to book a miles remeption flight for myself and my wife, and we need 90,000 Miles together. I have 50,000 and she has 42,000.

I have asked flying club if we can pool together the miles to get the 2 flights and they told me that this was not possible and would need to pay to transfer the 3,000 to my wife.

This is fine, but I just wanted to confirm that it’s right and if there is any other way to avoid the charge?

Thanks for your help.

Steve

I believe that’s correct, only Gold FC members can pool miles. If you’re not Gold you’ll each need 45,000 miles in your account.

I’d only consider buying or transferring 3,000 miles if it’s time critical as the fees are deliberately kept high to put you off. If you can wait a bit, there are plenty of other ways to earn miles: credit cards, Shops Away, hotel/car hire bookings or converting Tesco Clubcard/Amex Membership Reward points for example.

Take out the new VS credit card- 5k miles after your first transaction, the miles will post on the first statement.

Just remember that will take approx 5 - 6 weeks though between applying and your first statement being generated.

AmEx MR transfers are by far the quickest, often taking less than 5 minutes (if you have done a transfer previously).

Mileage redemptions are often time critical.

Forgive my ignorance what is an Amex MR transfer? I do have the Amex card.

Time is of the essence unfortunately...

One last question, if we book like this, will it still all just be one booking or will they have to book us separately with two PNRs etc?

Amex has its own reward scheme for cards it issues (eg the Gold and Platinum). The points can be exchanged for any number of rewards, including VS and BA miles.

The scheme does not apply to VS’s own (soon to be withdrawn) Amex card.

And yes, you’ll be able to put both bookings on the same PNR although you should both be present when you call to book as they may require your wife to give permission for you to spend her miles.

I think the virgin wines bonus miles posts immediately so might be worth considering that! Think that’s 3k too

If you have any tesco clubcard points that could help and they transfer quickly.

I'm confused. In March of this year I had 30138 miles and my husband had 45627 miles : in total enough for two off peak PE seats to MBJ. I phoned Flying club and they transferred enough of my miles to my husband to "buy" 2 tickets. We were not charged for the transfer. I had always understood that as long as there were sufficient miles in one account for a half way redemption (in this case 17500 miles) it could be done. We are lowly Red - nowhere near Gold.
