Flight time change - now require to stay overnight

I booked to travel to Barbados from Manchester on 9 August with a connecting flight from Aberdeen by Flybe the same day (all through Virgin and one PNR). I should have had a two and a half hour transfer time at Manchester. I received an email from Virgin bringing the Barbados flight departure time forward by around half an hour to c1.30pm which didn't cause a problem. However reading the tripadvisor forum for Barbados there were some posts about flight time changes to Barbados. When I checked my booking I found that the flight was now departing at 11am and there was a message saying one of my flights would be missed on the current booking. I received no email about this, just happened upon it.

I phoned Virgin who confirmed the flight change and rebooked me on a connecting flight from Aberdeen on the 8th August. This means I have to take more time off work but more importantly I have had to pay £130 for a hotel at Manchester Airport. Should Virgin be responsible for any of this cost?

I have a friend who is also flying the same day from Manchester and they have not been alerted to the flight time change by Virgin at all!

I’m afraid unless you were given less than two weeks’ notice of the change, VS aren’t liable.

Their only obligation is to either rebook you (which they’ve done) or cancel your booking and fully refund you if you prefer.

Hotels, etc, are incidental costs which airlines aren’t liable for.

I suspected that was the case. The annoying thing is they didn't contact me at all!

Thanks
