Flights home (NYC-LON) for Christmas week (Fri-Sun) are currently $1800 return for economy!
Or, if you'd like extra leg room, they can be yours for a 'delight'-ful $2000!
I know it's a peak travel time but these really are incredible fares, never seen anything close to these numbers.
Am I deluding myself to think that they might come down...?

Wow ! as long as there is a heavy demand the price will not come down, i guess that it could increase.

What dates are you looking at? I'm seeing NYC-LHR for around £6-700 on a variety of Christmas dates.

Fri 21st - Sun 30th. I'm looking on the VS site.
How did you get a ticket priced in £ for an NYC departure?

Oh yes - I see those now. I was looking at post-Christmas departures.
I was using Google Flights

For what it's worth, you can go Premium for ~£1,700/$2,200!

Aha Google Flights - and yes it makes Premium look like a bargain!

Most fares have a minimum stay attached, and this is likely too short. Try Thursday to Sunday. Or Thursday to Monday.
If you read the fare conditions, it usually says in there. But its a mountain of text and even ticketing agents find it hard to understand.

It was a Friday to Sunday, across two Saturday nights - usually long enough to get a better fare.
Anyway, we fiddled with the dates a bit and in the end we found an option connecting through BOS on the outbound for 'only' $1315 each (economy)
