Taxes - Do I have to pay twice?

Hey all,

Question for you regulars please :-) I want to book a miles flight. I was planning on booking as soon as the dates become available for the outward leg, and then booking the return leg when it too becomes available. Two one way bookings. I just tried a 'test run' and it shows that I have to pay 1k taxes LGW-MCO leg and then if I do a one way back I get charges 1K USD taxes and yet, if I book it as a return, I only have to pay the 1k once.

Why is this please? And is it right?

Ah I see it's actually carrier imposed surcharges, not taxes. sneaky.

Hi

I can’t reply for all airlines, but with Virgin all you need to do is book the outward when it becomes available, then wait. When the return becomes available, ring FC and explain that you want to come home (which they will understand) and they’ll extend your outward flight and it’s PNR to be a return booking for when you want to come back. And they’ll only take the difference in taxes etc between the single you’ve paid already and the return costs.

Simple!

I have fallen foul of the higher charges for booking separate fares, but this year booked the outbound and then converted to a return. I did change the outbound date and got a small charge for the change but it was only £30

Thank you! I'll go ahead and book it then as it's showing available and I don't want to lose it. Thank you so much for your help! :-)

Just a reminder depending on what class you are travelling in, both BA and Virgin have added extra charges supposedly for the increase in fuel duty surcharges.

I booked a reward First return with BA in October early on and they charged me approx £1186, then later on in the month booked a reward Club and got charged £1386 on querying this was told the above reason. Linda
