Changing reward flight from Premium to UC

Hi,

What are the consequences of changing a reward flight from Premium to UC? I'd like to secure tickets and then when I have enough miles, upgrade to UC after a few months if there is availability.

Is it simply the difference of miles/ taxes, or does VA impose some sort of penalty?

Thanks, Stevey

What do you mean by secure tickets? Do you mean book a Premium reward ticket now with miles?

Assuming you book a Premium reward ticket, then obtain enough miles to upgrade to UC and there is availability in UC, then all you have to do is call up and ask to upgrade. You will only have to pay the difference in taxes. There is no penalty that I am aware of.

Thanks Matt, that's exactly what I meant. Just back long haul in economy on United from the US, so my brain isn't quite functioning properly.

Thank you, Steven

Matt is correct. I did exactly this last year. Sat on the Premium seats and checked the Virgin website every day (Reward Flight Finder wasn't available for Virgin then) and called when availability was there. I was about 8,000 miles short for the return leg and they just sold me what I needed to sort it all out.

The proper taxes (APD and airport fees etc) will be the same but the VS carrier surcharge will be higher (something like couple hundred quid but do a dummy booking to get an idea). Not sure if VS charge the £35 change fee or not.

Some would say the VS surcharge is penalty enough!
