I am a very occasional traveller, once a year with the family using my miles I have managed to accumulate over the year, then upgrading using my amex voucher and miles to pe.

I have a virgin money card , and I am looking at what to do next year......
its rubbish. they have halved my reward.

one person upgrade to pe or a companion flight in economy with no prospects of an upgrade.

family of 4! what is the best way to use this. I think I am going to have to look at other flight providers in the future, surely someone offers a better deal than this?

Yes, the BA Amex cards offer a 2-4-1 voucher that you can use in any cabin as long as there’s reward availability, irrespective of status.

It’s not the best is it! I can’t see much value for the in frequent flyer and red or silver member. For a family of 4 the only real option is to save up 2 as they last 2 years and book 4 eco and upgrade to pe for one leg (day flight), then use miles or cash for a J on the other leg.

At the end of the day I don’t think it’s the best reason to get the card though, the promo sign up bonuses on offer are epic compared to the recent Amex cut backs and the earning rate of 1.5 miles to the pound on a MasterCard is again substantially better than most others out there.

We have the BA Amex premplus card and it is indeed very good, remember you still have to pay the annual £195 and you will need a LOT of airmiles to use especially for a family of four.

AS there are only two of us it still takes a lot for us to go Business and First, but we do fly 2/3 times a year. We put all our spending where we can on the Amex, Tesco on their card only in store then convert when and if there is ever a transfer bonus on (very rare these days) and we have the Virgin one for anywhere that does not take Amex.

Any insurances and shopping I go through Topcashback which offers BA Avios to convert your cash back to they recently had a 25% bonus on which I took great advantage of. the Lloyds Avios card although they have dropped the Amex part give you Avios on balance transfers!!

anybody any more ideas for earning Avios. Linda

head for points is good for airline/hotels programs and comparisons of cards with travel-related benefits, there's a lot of info on avios

Can you not use the voucher to book Economy seats and then upgrade further with miles or is this restricted?

Looking to next summer no idea on destination yet but..

Plan is for 2 adults one child to fly out premium from UK and then back via CDG/AMS in Upper

I have one voucher from the card, would i be able to use this to upgrade two of outward tickets from economy to premium tickets ? or would i only be able to use it for mine - if so what happens to the other half of the voucher is it simply lost?

If the rules are the same as the old VS Amex card, then you can use it to upgrade two single journeys or one round trip. I'd confirm with VS though.

I’ve only recently found out about Topcashback, but didn’t realise you could convert cash earned to Avios, so thanks for that tip Linda. Like with you, there are just two of us travelling, we haven’t yet earned enough miles for a free flight, but usually can reduce the cost by redeeming some miles. Haven’t flown VS for maybe three years, but think it’s far harder to get enough for reward flights with any airline now.

I said for a long time that I wouldn’t use BA, their staff went on strike far too often (that seems to have reared its head again), though in the end, I found VS destinations too limiting. That said, I’d still like to fly with them again,,,,,
