Hello from a pretty busy LHR Clubhouse this morning.

Soon be boarding the VS7 to LAX. I’m actually flying onwards to SFO this evening on a separately booked DL flight and then onwards again to PSP tomorrow on Alaska.

A return VS Z fare to LAX was considerably cheaper than it was to SFO direct.

Now onboard G-VWOO. J is pretty full with just 3 empty seats.

Weather nice and calm and still here this morning so should be a smooth ride all being well. 10hrs 27mins flight time....not done a west coast flight for quite some time now!

Though I did make it perfectly clear what I thought about this ridiculous and silly new policy about removing beef from all the menus ...the crew pretty much agreed as well.

It’s come right from the CEO himself apparently.

Interestingly no beef on the menu on my BA J flight next month. Lamb instead.

Has the price of beef shot up recently? Or is this some new planet-saving fad I’m not aware of?

I’d love to see lamb on the menu at VS, can’t see it though with how expensive it currently is.

The bangers and mash on the current menu is highly recommended though, just short of some tomato sauce to go with it though.

Probably more attention being drawn to how much CO2 is produced from beef production, particularly when compared to other meats. I still don't think removing beef from menus to discourage beef consumption is the right way to go about things. If you really want to reduce consumption of something, education or prices/taxation is a less intrusive way.

It wouldn't surprise me if SRB's views on beef consumption is at play here, but I should stress I have no proof!

Funny how soy is also off the menu due to their environmental impact, despite an upturn in plant-based milk consumption which is also partly because of the environmental impact of anything from cow's such as beef. I'm a fully paid up cow's milk drinker, but what are VS going to offer those who drink soya instead of cow's milk for health reasons?

Palm oil I can completely understand, especially if they can't guarantee it's coming from sustainable resources.

I would like the option of choosing whether or not to eat beef, not to have that decision imposed upon me by a company that pretends to care about the environment but is perfectly happy to keep flying fuel-guzzling 4-engine 747s and A340s around the world to suit itself when they should have been retired years ago.

I like to use the term "Slacktivism". Whatever gives the appearance of "doing something" with the least effort.

So what meat dishes were on offer? I see you mention bangers and mash. Hope you're having a great time.

Mains:

Bangers & mash
Chicken Linguine
Vegetable Tagine
Louisiana Crab Cakes

(Which I think is still the same menu since December as I had the crab cakes when I flew to JFK at the end of Dec)

The Extra bites:

Mezze Plate
Spicy Pork meatballs
Chicken Tikka
The usual afternoon tea sandwich/ cake selection

So VS are still quite happy serving pork but not beef!

Bangers & mash is a dish I would expect to be served in economy, not Upper, regardless of how gourmet the sausages may be.

A premium product should serve premium meals. That selection is something I’d expect to see in the “three ready meals for £7” aisle at Tesco.

I'm in total agreement on all counts, including the absence of beef from the menu.
