Cancellation Fees on Reward Tickets

I've posted this is another thread but quickly realised it'll be lost.
Quick summary. I paid for 2 x G tickets using miles. Am Gold 4 Life, which as some new users might now know is a considerable spend and takes a decade. Unfortunately I've had to cancel both outbound and return tickets (separate tickets) and was charged £30 for each portion. Regardless of my status with VS is this the norm for reward seat cancellations? I've read various older threads and called VS three times to get the same response. No sir, but we don't charge Gold members for changes etc... Well whoopie doo! What's the difference between a change and a cancellation?
