How long do you need to transfer in Atlanta
Looking at Manchester to Miami via Atlanta
Or drive to Heathrow and direct to Miami

Thanks for any advice

At least 2.5 hours. I always try and go for minimum 3 hours.
I had LHR-JFK-BOS last year as BOS direct flight was cancelled. Had 4 hour layover, but LHR-JFK was delayed by 1.5 hour, immigration at JFK was nightmare, and just made it to boarding gate for BOS flight 5 minutes before boarding started.

However saying that, if it’s all booked on one ticket, you will be protected if you miss the connecting flight.

Although I have done gate to gate in ATL in 1 hour, I agree a minimum of 2 1/2 hours connection time is prudent.

The Immigration line, baggage reclaim and more recently the Security lines can all be unpredictable at ATL.

Checked through my emails and when I connected there last year I had 2.5 hours. It was loads of time, allowing for time in the Delta SkyClub and taking my time. I agree with wanting to have 2 though. Outbound from UK could be delayed, you have to collect your luggage and drop it off at the transfer, go through TSA again, and more than likely need to get the Plane Train to another terminal (I had enough time to potentially walk, but didn't bother). Could pick up at a delay at any of those points, and imagine it could be stressful ++

Luggage will be be babelled to MIA but you have to collect luggage at ATL and drop it off again.

Stay to the left when exiting the baggage reclaim hall then turn left.

Then just hand the baggage over to guys on the left of the hall by the belt and proceed through security.
