Obtaining Refund - Conflicting Info

I booked PE tickets online for two friends to join me on an upcoming trip LAX/LHR. The confirmation pages that printed out from the VS website say "no restrictions" concerning changes or cancellations, yet when they arrived the actual tickets read "non-refundable".

As luck would have it, the two friends cannot go with me on this trip. Res agent told me "sorry, they must use tix within 1 year or you lose the $$", but that seems at odds with the printout.

Do you have a recommendation for how I could obtain a refund, as it is very doubtful that the friends will be able to go anywhere within the one year period, and I thought I was buying unrestricted tix? By the way, I paid about $1,100 each for these tix.
