Assuming I renew AU next year, I will have 2 companion tickets to use. Do I need to purchase 2 rev fares in order to use both Companion tickets or can I just purchase 1 rev fare and use both ?

BOTH companion fares need a qualifying revenue fare associated to them - so you would have to purchase 2 J/W/S/Y/B/L tickets to use both of them at the same time.
