I have read many posts that say the seatbelts in the UCS have airbags in them and and travelling xmas day with my 11 month old son and wanted to know if this was true, and if so is it safe with the infant in your lap.

I can only aswer with regards to my son, who has flown UC since he was 2.5, they give you a setbelt extension for tyhe chair, the bed side does not have the airbag, just a normal belt.
They do not have cots for tots in UC.

There are sensors on the belt buckle (I think, anyway...) that activate the airbag (the three little black "bumps" on the plate and corresponding points on the buckle)

I have a feeling that using an extender may disable these sensors, so therefore not activating the bag?


Could be COMPLETELY wrong, but those sensors/bumps are there for a reason, I'm sure...

Not sure whether the bumps would be sensors or signal and power supply connections for the air bag deployment mechanism.

AlanA, when you say they give you an extender for the chair, does that mean you have to flip up for turbulence if you have an infant. Doesn't your 2.5 year old get their own seat?

Does anyone know abything about what triggers an UCS air bag deployment, and whether there have been any accidentals.

In the past there have been problems with car air bags deploying and injuring people. Has this been taken into account with UCS?

No, he does have his own seat. The extender is only for the seat with the airbag. The airbag is designed to deploy to the side of the passenger as the seat is not straight on and in a crash that is whre you would be flung sideways

I am crew for VS. You will be given a CHILD AIRBAG BUCKLE, Its for use during take off and landing for Children aged 2 years old and upto 12 years.

This is to prevent the Whip Effect sometimes expierenced in an impact when the UCS is occupied by a child, which in turn can result in the seatbelt opening when the airbag is deployed.

The Airbag will only deploy if there is a force of 7.5g in 45 miliseconds. It will not deploy in any turbalance therefore that is why there is not one on the bed side of the chair. We also have them in the main cabin on Bulk Head seats on all A340-600 ac this is because any new types of AC made now have to have Airbag seatbelts fitted in seats where there is no where to protect your head in an inpact.

I have visions of future aircraft being equipped like cars, with frontal airbags in all seats, side airbags on window seats, and when they go off the whole cabin being filled with white bags, rather like being smothered by the Stay Puff giant in Ghostbusters :D:D
