Upgrading with miles/cash at airport

Husband and I are booked in PE from LHR to DEL in March.
I am FC Red and have 27,000 miles which is enough to get me an upgrade to UC one way. :D

I asked the flying club whether its possible to upgrade my husband too using the remaining 7,000 miles I have (will probably have about 10,000 by the time we travel as I have a Virgin credit card) and they said that this wasn't possible but to ask at the airport.

Where is a miles promo when you need one !

Has anyone done this at the airport and have any idea how much it might be. Not sure what fare class we are in as it was booked through Kuoni but it is upgradeable without extra cost plus 20,000 miles one way to DEL. I think she mentioned fare class S but not sure.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Am tempted just to upgrade me and leave hubby it PE but that would be mean [}:)]

Oh I don't know, it would seem perfectly acceptable to me;)[}:)]

I think it will all depend on the loading on the day. If it is full at the back, and they are going to have to do upgrades anyway then you may be lucky. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

If you do the UG on the way back you'll have an extra 6.5k from the outbound so you'll only be 3.5k short.

You could ask to go overdrawn - it is not unknown (especially since you'll earn them on the return leg) although the red status is not the best situation to be asking from.

S class is indeed upgradeable with miles without paying any cash and it is 20,000.

If there is availability just ask at the desk and they can sort that out for you, but as far as going overdrawn - i've never heard of that and bear in mind no-one at the airport works for flying club, they can only debit miles so no-one would be able to authorise it.

But check whether it's UC or J2000 seats as to be honest if it's not the suite i'd stick with premium and spend the miles on another flight to upgrade.

Overdrawing not a problem for higher status card holders. If you have a revenue flight booked which will clear the balance then it also helps.

I have to say the ticketing staff at the airport have always been very helpful and knowledgeable on FC. I tried exactly what is being suggested (miles + money upgrade) and although I failed, the ticketing chap turned the phone red hot trying to swing it for me

As you say, going overdrawn is allowed (I've done it) but it definitely seemed to help that I had revenue flights booked which would clear the debt.

In my experience, getting late or tricky upgrades is best achieved by calling Flying Club before you checkin. They have access to loading and have, on occasion, called revenue for me to get seats released for upgrades when checkin staff may not have been able to.

Forgot to mention, we are travelling back via Dubai (5 nights at the Jumeirah Beach hotel !) Its before the VS flights begin to DBX so have to come back on Emirates [:(]

Thanks for all the responses :D Will try on the day and see what happens. In the meantime will try and earn the miles to get nearer what I need. Have just applied for the second FC credit card (2 miles per pound) in the hope I'll also get miles on joining. Only 8 weeks til we fly so not much time.

Cheers

Does anyone know if this is allowed?

I too have a Virgin CC but opted for the £=1 mile, would I be allowed to apply for another card but this time opting for the £=2 miles one. More importantly, would I get the 4000 bonus miles for applying?

Thanks in advance
