I have to say I have nbeen a member of Ba for the past 18 months and I cannot understand how it works - it has miles and points - and not like Sia that just simply lets you put all the miles together from both flights / hotels etc-- does anybody know how the ba system really works ?

To be honest, a lot of experience with BA's E.Club can be found on the BA Board on FlyerTalk. Most people here, as you can probably guess, focus their flying on Virgin Atlantic - so there is limited knowledge available.

Here goes;

Tier points: These are used for your membership level ( Blue is entry) and you need 600 tps in a year to move up ot silver ( for lounge access) Then another 1500 in the year since making silver to go to Gold.
You only get tier points on the more expensive semi flexible fares ( all World traveller plus, club and first)- more tp's for the higher cabins.

Miles: You earn these on flights/car hire/hotels/BA amex etc and use them for upgrades.

For the cheap economy fares: 25% of miles ( min 500)so min 125 miles
Semi/Flexible economy 100%
WT + 125%
Club World 150%
First 200%

Different miles may apply on BA partners and One World member flights.

Just to add - the BA scheme is very similar to the VS one.

Miles are earnt by flying and other means in exactly the same way. Hotels, Credit cards, fuel purchases etc. can help boost your total.

Just like Flying Club, tier points are earnt by flying and dictate your status. The BA system has high point values and higher thresholds for the levels - the system needs the granularity because BA has domestic, short-haul and long-haul, and up to 4 classes on any given flight.
